Withdraws name at OSU

Bob Thomason on Monday removed himself from consideration for the men's basketball head coaching job at Oregon State.

Thomason, 53, the head coach at University of the Pacific for 14 years, interviewed with Oregon State athletic director Mitch Barnhart on Friday in Corvallis. After discussing the opportunity with his family, and with the winter signing date coming up Wednesday, he decided to withdraw his name.

''I don't know who they are going to hire,'' Thomason said Monday. ''It's a good situation, but it's not going to be me.''

Thomason said he enjoyed being considered for the job, but he had concerns over the drab condition of some of the athletic facilities, including Gill Coliseum, Oregon State's home court.

The Beavers were ninth in the Pac-10 this season and are a perennial bottom dweller. They last won the Pac-10 championship in 1990.

Ritchie McKay resigned from Oregon State on March 28 after two years to replace Fran Fraschilla at New Mexico. Thomason's name was one of many that surfaced almost immediately as a possible replacement.

Thomason interviewed with Barnhart during the Final Four in Atlanta, then again Friday. The Oregonian reported Monday that Arizona assistant Jay John and South Florida head coach Seth Greenberg were interviewed in Corvallis last weekend as well, John on Saturday and Greenberg on Sunday. Ken Goe, who covers Oregon State athletics for The Oregonian, learned Monday that Greenberg also withdrew from consideration.

That leaves John, who might be offered the job as early as today.

Thomason said he's excited about what lies ahead at Pacific, working with the returning players and the incoming recruiting class. He also said he hopes to ''create some more excitement around here.''

Pacific was 20-10 this season and advanced to the semifinals of the Big West Tournament.

''The hardest part was with our recruits,'' said Thomason, who's 222-185 at Pacific. ''That was driving me insane, and I'm glad that's worked out. Hopefully, we'll get them signed.''

Thomason has received verbal commitments from 6-foot-10 Tyler Newton of Shasta College, guard David Doubley of Skyline College and guard Myree Bowden of Cabrillo College. Thomason also has his sights set on another interior player, whose name wasn't released per NCAA rules.

Pacific expects to return point guard Demetrius Jackson, forwards Eli Nolan and Jasko Korajkic, center Tim Johnson, swingman Tom Cockle, who took a year off, and redshirt guard Miah Davis.

Thomason has one year remaining on his contract. He said he ''spoke a little'' with athletic director Lynn King late last week about a possible extension. King is interviewing candidates for the women's basketball coaching vacancy, which was created when Sherri Murrell resigned in March to take over at Washington State.

Thomason expressed his thanks to boosters and friends who offered their support the past two weeks.

''The opportunity to go in there and do well will present itself for someone,'' Thomason said.

Barnhart also has spoken with Bobby Braswell of Cal State Northridge, who has since dropped out, former OSU standout and current Boston Celtics assistant Lester Connor, former Sacramento State head coach and current Milwaukee Bucks assistant Don Newman and Seattle SuperSonics assistant Dean Demopolous, once the head coach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
