Two Tigers too much

Jackson, McLemore share spotlight as Pacific moves into share of fourth

The University of the Pacific needed a big game from its starting backcourt and got it.

Junior point guard Demetrius Jackson controlled the first half, then senior off-guard Maurice McLemore took over in the second half.

Jackson scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first 20 minutes, and McLemore scored all 14 of his points in the second half, as the Tigers earned a big win over Cal State Northridge 74-58 in front of 2,986 on Thursday at Spanos Center.

"We got a lot of shots and it felt like we were getting all the loose balls and rebounds," said McLemore, who also dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds. "We tried to take good shots."

The Tigers (14-6, 6-4 Big West) have won three consecutive games at home and are tied with Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara for fourth place. By the way, Pacific will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday and to San Luis Obispo to play the Mustangs on Feb. 9.

Cal State Northridge (8-11, 7-3) fell out of a tie for first place with UC Irvine and is tied for second place with Utah State. There are five teams within two games of the conference-leading Anteaters with eight games remaining.

Pacific turned the ball over 24 times and surrendered 17 offensive rebounds in a 70-59 loss at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 5. The Tigers stewed over that loss and vowed revenge. They earned it by committing 10 fewer turnovers and by nearly matching the Matadors on the glass.

But the keys were Pacific's ability to create offense off Cal State Northridge's pressure and its defense.

"We knew coming in that they were going to play hard, and we had to execute," said Jackson, who was sensational the first 20 minutes. "It was very up-tempo, very energetic. I was able to feed off that. I got a couple shots to fall early, and it just kept going."

At times, Cal State Northridge coach Bobby Braswell must have thought he was watching a carbon copy beat his team. The Matadors feast on other team's misery with a brand of all-out, man-to-man defense. Pacific handled it by moving the ball, driving through seams, and finding the open man.

Defensively, Pacific was active along the perimeter, and the big men clogged the middle, except for a brief stretch late in the game. The Matadors shot 26.9 percent in the first half and 36.4 percent for the game, and committed 16 turnovers, two more than the Tigers.

"(Pacific) came out with a lot more energy," said Braswell, who has five freshmen and a sophomore on the roster. "Their players felt like there was more at stake than our players. Our youth showed."

Jackson led the Tigers' charge to start the game with a 3-point shot. He made three free throws after being fouled while attempting another 3-pointer, then David Bunts had a 3-pointer, and center Mike Preston converted a three-point play to give the Tigers a 12-2 lead just three minutes into the game. The lead grew to 19 points (38-19) when Jackson made his second 3-point shot just before halftime.

Jackson made 5-of-7 from the floor and all eight of his free-throw attempts in 18 minutes of the first half. He also cut his turnovers in half from the previous meeting with four on Thursday.

"We didn't want to underestimate them like we did the first time," Jackson said. "We wanted to deliver the first punch."
