Tigers split pair with Utah

By Rick Brewer

What a difference a day makes.

Thursday's rainy skies gave way to sun, wind and chill Friday at Billy Hebert Field. That allowed University of the Pacific's baseball team to finally complete its season opener.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, the resmuption didn't go as well as the original.

Jed Chrisman's infield single with the bases loaded and one out in the 12th inning gave Utah the go-ahead run, and the Utes went on to beat Pacific 10-5 in the first of two games.

Pacific won the nightcap 15-7.

The Tigers led 3-0 when the first game resumed in the bottom of the second inning. Both teams played the next few innings as if the respective buses were double parked. Within 20 minutes, it already was the top of the sixth because neither team could get a man on base against relievers Cheyenne Rushton of Utah and Matthew Pena of Pacific.

That changed when Utah put together a five-run rally -- including Chrisman's grand slam into the stiff wind -- to take the lead. Brett Baldwin reached on an error, Adam Castleton singled and Nate Weese walked to load the bases for Utah.

Chrisman delivered on Pena's first pitch to dead center field directly into the breeze, which was blowing the flag straight back at the batters' box.

"My intent was just to hit a line drive, and the ball was down, so I had to swing up on it," Chrisman said.

Pacific tied it in the eighth when Josh Snook hit a two-out, two-run homer into left field. Adam Alverson walked immediately ahead of Snook, who had an RBI single in Thursday's first inning.

The Tigers loaded the bases with two out in the 10th but couldn't score. Things unraveled in the 12th when Pacific committed three infield errors. The Utes took advantage with three singles and a fielder's choice to put the game away.
