Tigers tumble

Youth, errors cost Pacific

Babies don't just rise from the floor and walk. They fall, too. And University of the Pacific's freshman-heavy softball team took its first tumble Saturday.

Playing their first doubleheader against their second consecutive top-five opponent, the Tigers matched the third-ranked Cardinal punch for punch in the opener before losing 2-1 in nine innings, then were knocked around in the second game 8-2 before a crowd of about 400 at cold but sunny Bill Simoni Field.

Six days after beating No. 5 Cal 4-0 in their opener, the 19th-ranked Tigers (1-2) stranded 13 baserunners -- seven in scoring position -- in the opener and then surrendered 11 hits and committed two errors in the second game.

What now, coach Brian Kolze? Worried? Frustrated? Ready to retire and play golf? Uh, no, no and no.

''We're going to be fine,'' Kolze said with a reassuring smile. ''I'm disappointed we lost, but it's not like we didn't have the effort.''

The Tigers had a chance to win the opener, then nearly lost 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning. They loaded the bases on three walks with none out, but grounders to second and the mound forced back-to-back runners at home. But freshman Kristen Allen, who homered to break a scoreless tie against Cal, singled in Barbara Moody with the tying run.

Stanford, like Cal a College World Series participant last season, went ahead in the ninth on Kira Ching's leadoff walk and Cassi Brangham's RBI double off the top of the fence in left field.

Losing pitcher Cindy Ball scattered six hits and received considerable help from freshman catcher Ashlie D'Errico, who threw out two runners at second, one at third and dived from behind the plate to catch a popped up bunt.

''We recruited Ashlie at Stanford,'' Cardinal coach John Rittman said. ''I'm very impressed with her.''

Stanford tagged Pacific sophomore Jennifer Dacre for six runs and six hits in the second game to take a 6-0 lead after three innings. Cardinal pitcher Maureen LeCocq went 3-for-4, including a solo homer in the second and an RBI single during a three-run third. Leadoff hitter Robin Walker homered in the sixth for the Cardinal's final run.

Left fielder Barbara Moody had five of Pacific's 12 hits and scored two of the Tigers' three runs in the doubleheader.
