The Record

It was a record day for University of the Pacific's swimming teams.

The men's and women's teams are leading the Big West Conference championships in Long Beach going into the final day, and the Tigers set five conference records. The Pacific women have never won the conference title, and the men haven't won in 28 years.

The Pacific women set four records -- Kristy Mathews in the 1,000 freestyle (10 minutes, 7.05 seconds), Heidi Schmidt in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.32) and Sarah Marshall in the 100 backstroke (54.67) set individual records, and the 800 freestyle relay team of Mathews, Marissa Taylor, Leilani Avila and Robin Errecart set a record at 7:25.78.

Marshall qualified for the NCAA meet in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly (53.99), and Schmidt in the 100 breaststroke and Shannon Catalano in the 100 butterfly (53.7) also qualified.

For the men, the 200 medley relay team of Jarrod Cruzat, Filip Wronski, Will McLaughlin and Ryan Jones set a Big West record at 1:30.99.

The Pacific men lead UC Santa Barbara 637.5-567, and the Pacific women lead the Gauchos 669-569.
