Pacific sweeps Big West swim titles

The Record

The University of the Pacific women's swim team did something Saturday it had never done before. The Pacific men's swim team did something it hadn't done in 28 years.

Both claimed team championships at the Big West Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championship in Long Beach.

''I thought this day would never come,'' Tigers coach Ray Looze said. ''It's just a wonderful feeling.''

Pacific had the male and female swimmers of the year in Filip Wronski and Sarah Marshall, and Looze was coach of the year.

The Big West title was the first for the Pacific men since 1974, and it broke UC Santa Barbara's 23-year hold on the crown -- the longest streak in NCAA history. The Pacific women won all but one event to claim their first Big West championship.

Wronski won the 100 and 200 breaststroke races, was second in the 200 individual medley and swam on the winning 200 and 400 medley relay teams. Marshall won the 100 and 200 backstroke events, was second in the 100 butterfly and swam on the victorious 200 and 400 medley relay teams. She also qualified for the NCAA meet in each of those events.

The Pacific women, who went into the Big West meet ranked 20th in the nation, also will have Robin Errecart, Shannon Catalano, Lyndsay McNamee and Heidi Schmidt in the NCAA meet.
