Pacific wins two in softball

The Record

The 12th-ranked University of the Pacific softball team won two games Sunday to finish 3-1 in the UNLV Mini Tournament in Las Vegas.

Freshman Ashlie Platten pitched her first collegiate shutout as the Tigers beat No. 15 DePaul 2-0, then senior Cindy Ball pitched a three-hitter and struck out a season-high 10 to lead Pacific over UNLV 5-1.

Platten (3-0) pitched a two-hitter, walked one and struck out four. Estee Okumura tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, then Aloha Yamaguchi scored on a triple by freshman Michelle Anunciation in the fifth.

Four of Pacific's six hits were for extra bases, including two doubles by Barbara Moody as the Tigers (10-3) avenged a 2-0 loss to DePaul on Saturday.

Ball (6-2) had three of Pacific's nine hits against the Runnin' Rebels (9-9), and Anunciation hit her first career home run to extend the Tigers' lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth. Freshman Brandi Gordon had her first collegiate triple, a double and two RBI.

Saint Mary's 11, Pacific 9

At Moraga, the Gaels (4-8) scored six runs in the fifth to win the rubber game of the three-game series. The Tigers (4-5) answered Saint Mary's four-run first with a five-run second. Octavio Amezquita's single drove in Pacific's first run.

Pacific starter Todd Bergthold allowed 10 runs, five hits and two walks, and he hit three batters before being relieved with none out in the fifth. Michael Fitzgerald had four hits for the Tigers, giving him eight in two games. Tim Gilhooly of Pacific singled to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
