Subject: Kubiak thinks Dalton is a little more than "serviceable"
In reply to: BFIH 's message, "Enjoy sir" on 22:19:31 12/06/11 Tue

I'm guessing you haven't actually gotten much chance to eyeball him at all?

Kubiak said the same thing brainfry said to me Sunday when I asked him to say what player he most "reminds" him of (I see flashes of Ken Anderson - which I've seen some former Bengals say the same - or possibly Drew Brees).

>>> Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said during Wednesday's conference call with the Cincinnati media that Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton reminds him of Brett Favre the way he competes and plays the game. He also said from what he's seen, Dalton can make every throw and has no worries about his arm strength.

"I don't want to put this kind of pressure on him but I know when we studied him in the draft I told guys he reminded me of Brett Favre a little bit when he came out," Kubiak said. "He obviously threw the ball a lot more than Brett did coming out but just the way you watched him play the games, the way you watched him find a way to win, find a way to make a play. That's what it's all about in this league. You've got to be able to improvise and he can definitely do that.

"I don't see any throws he hasn't been able to make. I've got one in my mind down in Seattle where he moved to his left and hit (A.J.) Green down the middle of the field. I see him making every throw you need to make and that's all that matters." (from Hobbitson)<<<

AD seems to have a special awareness to know where the rush is coming from in space and sidestep it at the last second (so cool to watch him do this, plus after pissberg got so far ahead all they did was tee off & go after him having to put it up, which I also agree with Marvin pulling him in the face of that as well to save him from an unnecessary beating), all the while also being able to keep track of where his receivers are in their routes. This is something that Palmer never really seemed to demonstrate much. Dalton sort of floats around behind our zone-blocking scheme without true need of a clean pocket (perhaps by design) in addition to the sprints, bootlegs & rollouts they feature. The wooden Palmer required "max protect" with extra TEs & a FB to keep his immobile ass upright for Brat's more downfield precision scheme. The ball control NCO also allows sooo much more for Marvin to feature his favored field position approach to managing a game as well, something that never meshed with Brat's St Louis style scheme.

I don't think the limiting factor on the offense is Dalton now either, but the fact that Gruden just didn't have time to install anything like the full weight of his full scheme, plus the fact that the rest of the offensive personnel likely can't absorb it at the same pace as Dalton. Sure they've been protecting him by still featuring the run but those blinders can come off at any time. Lack of the full scheme is what keeps that in place more so than Dalton, imo.
