of the LASIK procedure. I say go for it. My thoughts on the doctor selection...

Most will advertise how many procedures they've done (in the thousands) - if they don't, find out. Go to someone who knows what he is doing.

Beyond that, choose someone who your comfortable with in the free pre-screening process. I had no complications, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd choose a different place - I went to one of the lower cost outfits around here ($799 an eye). My feeling after it was all over is that they were more interested in my money than anything else. The pre-screening was done by an optometrist, but not a surgeon (with many of the places, the surgeon performing the procedure will meet patients during screening). They had a schedule of follow-up appointments after the surgery which they reduced after deciding I was fine - except my vision in one eye was not yet where I expected it to be (results will be immediate, but it may take several months to get close to 20/20, if you get there). Aftercare/follow-up appointments were 5 minutes - since I wasn't paying (or more correctly, had already paid), they got me in and out as fast as possible.

I compare this experience to others who paid a little more and got tremendous aftercare - full eye exams and honest results, rather than the doctor asking... "well, are you happy with the results?" My surgeons were clearly motivated to convince patients their vision was acceptable, so they wouldn't have perform a second corrective surgery at their cost.

All of this only matters if it doesn't go well the first time, I guess - so I'm not unhappy with the decision to have the surgery or the results, but after doing it, I'd put a little more effort into selecting a doctor.

One other comment - I'm not sure how your medical benefits are with your school system, but if they offer a flexible spending account that you can contribute too, take advantage of it for this. LASIK should be covered. You end up paying for the surgery with tax-free dollars, and you can usually get reimbursed for the full amount you plan to contribute that calendar year immediately - even if you have the surgery in January. You basically get free financing for 12 months and a several hundred dollar discount, after considering the tax advantage.
