1) I don't recall hearing a single voice from the conservative side that professed to believe he meant anything other than what was assumed.

2) He's made similar remarks in the past and has done the circuit of very bigoted, segregationist groups (CCC) throughout his career. Why it was this and not earlier comments/speeches that did him in, I don't know.

3) I don't know the chronology, but he had ample opportunity to apologize before his first half-hearted apology which necessitated follow-up apologies.

4) Re: Jackson and Sharpton -- it's been decades since Jackson has run for President; and Al has never run for president even though he says he will this time. Bob Dole and Lamar Alexander have run for President and gotten more than a tiny bit of coverage, yet they are not cited as the ultimate source of Republican wisdom. That's BS and you know it. The people who trot out Jackson and Sharpton do so, not because they think they speak for the Democrat party, but because they wish to distort, confuse and change the topic.
