I am NOT a Trent Lott fan and never have been. I've always considered him a rather typical politician who "played the flute or the harp depending on where he was" to borrow from an old Irish Rover song. Maybe he was pandering to bigots when he made his remark, I don't know...

Still... why is it that people can't take his explanation of his remarks at face value instead of reading in that he was praising Segregation?

I mean has Trent Lott done anything in the last 20 years to indicate he wants to push an agenda of Segregation? And really how much delay are we talking about from the time his remark was reported to his apology? I don't recall it being that long a gap, but in all honesty I wasn't folliwng the news that closely.

Another thing as I think about it... the reason why people site guys like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton as spokesmen for the Democratic party probably has to do with the fact they've both run for President of the USA as Democrats and garnered considerable media attention.

Also I think Hillary Clinton's nasty remarks to the effect that ALL Republicans are racist were out of line and uncalled for.
