Subject: Welcome to Culture

•Culture is becoming an increasingly critical medium for economic, educational, and political transactions, not just an amenity.

•Globalization is increasing the importance of cultural understanding.

•Cultural assets are increasingly strategically important to communities.
--What are some of these strategic uses?

•Cultural organizations, from a humanities point of view, include far more than performing and visual arts organizations, although these are included. Cultural organizations include historic sites/museums, heritage organizations, children’s museums, leadership organizations, libraries, leadership organizations, bar associations, economic development entities, and a host of educational organizations.

•Cultural organizations, their leaders, and their resources may provide some of the locally focused leadership for communities, as corporations move and globalize their attention.

•Cultural assets may be used by communities to help “brand” communities as they compete for talent and expertise, as well as educate and nurture those who already live there.

--How do we honor and express various cultural traditions?
