Subject: Making a Tree

Hi everyone. I haven't posted on here in quite a while, so I'll give a little update with my post. My fs, Icarus was involved in a terrible accident last fall and had to have one of his legs partially amputated as a result. He fractured the leg and the two bones didn't go back together, so the vet said it was best to remove it. He has actually been doing great since then. The only change that I notice is that he doesn't seem to fly as far when I take him out of his cage, but he is still very active.

Speaking of his cage, this is where my question comes in. I just finished building him a big, beautiful cage to live in. I would like to put a "tree" in his cage for him to run around and climb on. I was thinking of making this tree from various branches screwed together from a maple tree limb that broke off during a recent storm. Is it ok to take wood from outside and put it into a cage? Is there something I should do to it first, or is it better to just go the hardware store and get some two by fours? Or is there anything else that you use as a sort of playground? Thanks :)
