For me, I would say the arrangement of the shots, and the angles and portrayal of his eyes and eyelines imply that Betsay hasn't talked to him at all, and neither has him, until she gets of the cab and asks him how much the fee is.

All the talkings are his imaginations.

We see certain shots of the close up of the mirror which reflectes images of Besty. She looks quite distant and indifferent, that does not look like in a talking mood. These shots are from Travis' point of view. Later we also see a few shots which are close ups of Travis's eyes reflected from the mirror. Those shots are quite odd, because the eyes do not look like those in the objective shots of his whole face. I believe these are the subjective shots of Betsy's, and even also OURS. There are two shots which are like he is gazing at us! As if he is aware of that he is being observed by us the audience...that he turns the mirror a little bit at last....

I think the shots are suggesting that there is in fact no talking within. Travis is only imagining.
