Subject: SS brake lines

I have now seen first hand the results of a failed SS line. It was on a friend's car (VW VR6 Jet). Got the call one day, "hey Phil I need your help! I just rear ended someone!!!" Oh no!

evidently the aftermarket line was too short and whoever installed it did not fasten it anywhere. also this line did not have any reinforcing tubing where it enterered the flange. anyways, it was being constantly flexed with steering action and eventually failed near the joint. the SS braid was totally unraveled there and chopped right through the inner hose core. He is so lucky it failed in slow traffic. Oh man let me tell you!

to make matters worse this was the second time around, no brakes, same line, same mfr., rear endo!?!

Now I have installed SS lines before and liked the way they stiffened up the pedal. There are even DOT-approved lines which hopefully means they are constructed well. I just sold a set for a RX7 and they did look nice.

Stock Porsche brake lines are really damn good though, just looking at their construction should make you feel at ease. Beefy! My choice here is if it ain't broke don't fix it and will go for stock spec.

As always brake components should be checked frequently even if all you do is check the level of the resevoir. (am surprised PO of the fridge let me drive the car given the leaking cylinder! did note low rez beforehand though and asked for fluid)

No matter what you gotta' be able to stop and steer - the two most important components of any car IMO. can someone else explain why our (sometimes leaking) steering racks are the way they are
