Subject: the ATF trick (engine)

(none of this is verified so YMMV! I thought it was interesting and want to archive it)

Neither have I but it's all the rage on the RX7 Forum. It's claimed that ATF is the highest detergent oil out there. So what they do to revive seals and clean out the rotors and housings (without a tear down) is to remove the plugs, pour a quantity of ATF in and rotate the engine a few turns to cover all surfaces. Sometimes let it sit overnight. Then crank it to expel, reinstall plugs and fire it up. I don't suppose it's very good for the cat though?
Anyone heard of this trick?

--- a reply follows ---

In the old days of carbs we used to squirt ATF straight down the carb (engine @ operating temp. and thumb on throttle) while the engine was running to clean oil/carbon deposits off of valves and seats. Seems to help with sticky valves as well.
The father of a very good freind of mine owned a trucking company and ran some stuff I think was call "SUPER Z". The stuff is red like ATF but didn't smeel the same. Before he passed he showed me how well the suff worked by dribbling a little in the combustion chamber of an old diesel truck head that was laying on a work table. This "SUPER Z" stuff turned that nasty cake of carbon into a pool of bubbling goo in a matter of minutes.

I then started running a few OZ's this suff in my 87 F250 6.9L diesel P-up with every fill-up. The blocks were a weak point on this model and yes I was lucky enough to have mine crack. When the wrench took the motor apart he called me a said that in 25 years of working on diesel engines this was the first one that he ever seen that was so clean inside (in fact he used the words "it looks new inside"). So I know this "SUPER Z" stuff works and changing the oil like we all do helps as well.

Cheers

max
