Subject: Reliability Tips and Maintenance Items

A/T cars will have had a less frenetic life but some of the same will apply to all 928s. I'm back in a GT and here's my do it now and not pay later list. By being proactive upfront hope to avoid stranded later. (you'll be ahead if P.O. already did some of this for you)

1. t-belt, water pump, rebuild tensioner, fluid change, belts and hoses, heater valve. small hose that heater valve connects to has proven to be a weak link over time. heater valve is convienence item. just do it all same time, lord knows you don't want t-belt to break ever. this will probably be most expensive service, budget $2k.

2. clutch master slave and maybe slave also. the slave hose was done already otherwise it would be on this list too. bursted slave hose or failing masters are common ailments as cars age. do it now. parts not overly expensive but cylinders are pita job.

2a. all brake lines. flush & bleed system. I never heard of a 928 factory brake line ever failing and not starting now. (oops forgot to order these) mechanic (or self) should check and advise on linings and rotors.

3. two new coils. again these have been known to fail over time (like any other car). freshen both before it's a problem. $65 each still? and easy DIY. Cheaper than stuck or burning out cat due to overrich condition. then you'll really be pi$$ed.

4. shifter cup and/or strap job. another well known wear point that could leave you stuck. the part is under $60 so why not be proactive. again, the last thing you want to be is stuck and this is an easy fix (and semi-permanent band aid in case of the strap job).

--- end of my stage one

that's not so bad is it?

another proactive addition would be r&r fuel pump and filter, around $200 total job. again if the pump fails you're going nowhere so how about a new pump now. it's up to your confidence level in components at least a decade old now depending on model year you buy.

there were a few other minor things on my list ie. p/s rez & hoses, throw couple of relays in glovebox, etc. but if you get the above items asap that should clear the way for zillions of troublefree miles. ok maybe not zillions but a lot

If we had a showing of hands on who here had any of the above happen this thread could get pretty long so we're sorting these cars out pretty damn good.

Good luck, happy hunting and 928s Forever!

Phil
