Thanks, Doug, j, Andy, Kaz, Phil, Al, Dennis K., and others.

I'm convinced now. I'll be letting this 928 go and continue my search. The future problems (in aggravation and $$$) appear to completely overwhelm any immediate savings in purchase costs. Still, it's been an education hearing everybody's expertise on this matter, so it's been a worthwhile distraction for a few days. Thanks for your help!

The beautiful sound when I started the GTS engine has convinced me that I need to get one (not necessarily a GTS, but a 928). If I still plan to spend around that much ($30k approx.) for a 928, I guess that means I will be looking for a 928 S4. I think I should be able to get a fine example, 1990 or 1991 model, reasonable miles, for somewhere in the $20-30k range.

I'm not in any particular hurry, so that's in my favor.

Thanks again. Rod
