Mine had the same problems as you describe. You have to press the long button ( it will light up) and hold it down while pressing down and holding one of the numbers to get it to set.

After set, you just have to push the button with the numbers on it to move to the new position.

My drivers side would not work at all and bought a new unit for about $50 and it worked fine.

My passenger side would move to old settings but I could not get it to reset to new settings. I took it apart and played with the ball bearings and springs. It was missing a spring on one button but it seemed to work after messing with it. Well it worked for only a day or so. So I took the good one and tried it on the passenger side and it worked. So I just bought another new unit rather than fight with it.

I guess the message is you need to buy a new unit. It just pops out and easily unplugs.
