Subject: Mystery oil

I’ll offer a word of support and a word of caution.

I have a pair of marine 427 Fords in a Chris Craft cruiser, and one engine “may” have had a sticking valve. In any case, it popped badly at 2900 RPM. A very knowledgable aficionado (who owned a Ford dealership) advised me to add an upper cylinder lube such as MMO, and to just run the motor. I did, and it “fixed itself”. Of course, I was all over the motor, adjusting the solid lifters, adding electronic ignition, changing the fuel filter, etc., so I’ll never know what exactly was wrong.

Years ago I had a friend who liked to run his Mercedes at Autobahn speeds on the Pennsylvania Interstate between Erie and State College (Penn State). He added a bit of 2-cycle outboard motor oil, because of the additional lubrication, and the fact that it burned “with no ash” (that oil is intended to burn). I suspect it increased the octane a bit too. He was (is) a real speed freak.

I’m wondering about the catalytic converter working overtime. Mobil has a test posted on the web, where they ran some cars with various oils and compared the results. All cars were run, say 200,000 miles. Of course, the one with Mobil-1 had “no wear”, but some of the others developed “blow-by”, which caused the catalytic converter to be replaced at 140,000 miles. The one with Mobil-1 used the same cat the whole way.

I think TECHRON is an excellent product, however I do think it is great for injectors, and probably bad for cylinder walls. It is a strong solvent, and the cylinders must be taking a scraping when you (I) use the stuff. Using MMO in the gas tank I would wonder about the cat and any ash build-up on the valves, etc.

Since the car has a cat, I’m sticking with premium gas.
