HVAC Slider Controls

While cleaning the dash on my '83 928 S, I removed the bottom slider control with the arrow pointing upwards. On assembly I realized that the link arm with the hole, that connects to the upside-down pin on the slider has come lose.

Try as I might, I can not get this arm re-connected working through the slit with thin wire and long nose pliers.

I need some advise on a procedure to get this done.

Replacing the thermostat was much easier !!!!
