Hi Johan,
You will probably need to take the unit out of the car and open it up to fix this.

The plastic switches engage metal spring clips behind and when new, the fit is very, very tight. You were probably able to pull your switch out because the plastic tabs that engage this spring have broken off or worn away. Even if your slider button is still good, it's a bizarre mechanism and it would be a miracle of automotive microsurgery if you were able to put the button back in correctly with needle nose pliers.

Pulling the HVAC head unit out of the car is not hard, but you will probably have to remove the carpeted side panels and loosen the center console to get room to plug and unplug the electrical connectors to the head unit. Usually, the wiring is too tight to pull the unit completely free of the console and do the disconnecting.

You may as well order up a new pair of sliders and replace them both while you're going through the trouble to get in there. Be very careful with the fiber optic lines that go to the buttons. After so many years, the glass will be very brittle and it can break within the black sheathing and reduce lighting performance, so handle them gently. Don't ask why I know this. :-)
