Subject: my horse dj...i need an opinion

at the show the other weekend one of her reins broke, and the other day when we went over to ride her, the whole bridle was gone!
we think that dave(the guy who's leasing her to us)took the bridle to get it fixed or something, but we weren't sure.
so i just rode her with her halter and two leadropes. IT wasnt so bad, she actually liked it i think!
but she wasn't as quick to turn when we were practicing barrels, she wasnt quite as responsive as i wished she would be.
we were thinking (since we'll probably get her the new bridle, hers is really old anyway) just to get her one without the bit like you see some cowboys doing anyway
but what i'm not sure about is if those kind are allowed in 4-h or if she'll start taking advantage of me without the bit(she's a pretty spunky horse, i gotta rule with an iron thumb(or bit) sometimes lol)
or should we get one like before, with the bit?

If the horse takes advantage of u with and without the bridle then just get her a slightly harsher bit but if u get a harsher bit then u must use it sparingly and gently. Because The horse probally has a hard mouth if she is getting oulled around on alot.and about the barrels. Try to use more of your leg pressure that pulling her around the barrels. U get more with sugar than vinager

i'll definietly think about that...i never really thought that she'd have a harder mouth...but that definitly sounds about right! she can be real great and reponsive on day and then the next day have an attitude and buck every ten minutes or try to bite...it keeps life exciting! lol she's great though...i think if i had some barrel lessons and read about it and practiced and stuff then dj could be right up there with corona and alisha! believe me, if she wants to run the course, she will take off like a bullet! and the other day she seemed to enjoy it:)

Ulisha and coronia have been practicing for years . She does barrels at 15 secconds and barrels at poles at a 20 thats really fast and faster than any 4-h horse in pa. It takes more than a fe lessons to get up with her. Even Samantha Armentrout has been praticing for awhile to get were she is. They do profesion rodeos and all so I wouldent compare the horses just yet.....

I used to have a tomb thimb bit on my horse but she would just disobey me so my instructor told me to by a harsher one which i did but it just made things worse my instructor told me it wasnt that i was using my hands to much so i thought i may as well by a bitless bit and see if she kills me, to my surprise she now performs perfectly and when i go in the paddock to catch her she will come to me know as well, so if i were you i would get a bitless bridal and just see how things go you can always change back! earthhorse in queensland is were i got mine from, you can send away for em their really worth the price! http://www.mena.org.au/earthhorse/ check em out they are very strong mines lasted 3 yrs in all weather and its still like brand new!
