ok first of all explain to your parents that You will not be doing any big jumps for awhile and that christopher Reeve was a big time rider.Let them know that the small jumps dont cause near as much of a threat and accident happen everywhere 24/7 but that if you have a good trainer then you will be taught to jump safely and cautiously.

I've only been riding for 3 years now, and am currently jumping 2"9' on a large pony. It took a little convincing for my parents too. And a year after I started jumping, I even broke my arm! Take them to a barn and let them watch other riders at your pase, or let your trainer explain to them what your plans will be, and how slowly you will be moving. Explain to them that you can fall off of a horse just as easily cantering around a ring as if u were jumping, and cause just as much damage. Learn the correct form, never jump alone or push the limits too much, and have a slow steady pased plan of what you will be jumping, and when. Your parents will realize that its not that scary (although my mom still closes her eyes)and accidents can happen anywhere. Happy trails!
