Subject: Tips for a intermediate rider

Hi everyone! I am an intermediate rider who is past learning to jump, and am now jumping my palamino (training him).

The thing is, when i come up to a jump, he wont refuse, but he'll sometimes do a runout. In other words, i have to be on him to the very last minute (or he'll swerve around cuz he's a big suck, but he CAN jump, he is able) so i dont have enough time to tuck into 2-point , and im usually out of sinc with him.

He's jumped before, but this guy is VERY stubborn, he is able to jump, like i said before. But any way to get him to stop running out, and so i can have more control?

If you have suggestions, please email me at
"red_ready_mix@hotmail.com" instead of replying here, (hehe im going to forget this website!!) and just title your email **tips for your jumping** so i know who it is!

Set up a jump on the wall. When you approach it the only way your horse can run out is to the inside, so use ur outside leg and rein to drive him in to it, set him up in the middle of the jump and GO with him, letting him jump it as you fold into 2 point.

You said your problem in one sentance. i have to say after him till the vary end. yes exactly you have to get after the horse. i don't have that problem with funny ( the horse i ride) all the time but i have to really get after her or she drag me around the feilds or the ring. She is known to cut a corner or cut a jump. remeber as well some horse are not going to be cofident jumpers ever.

Hey just let me say that alot of new jumpers can have this problem. It sounds like mabye he is a little afraid and unsure of whats happening. When I train a horse to jump sometimes I run into the same problem but if the horse knows I am confident then that helps him out a whole lot. Just ride him up to the jump like normal and then the last few strides look up and really really drive with your seat and legs to get him there and over it. Make him know that you are confident he can do it and that you are going over it together!!! hope I was helpful e-mail me if you want to chat some more!!!! just click on my name then!!!!

you should ride him straigh up to the fence. Steer him forward and give a little bit of extra leg to keep the motivation. It is hard for a horse to stop or run out when they are going up to the fence at a fairly good speed!
