Hey,
I'v been riding for 10 years or so, i do english, western, hunter jumper, and barrle racing. I would do what the other person said as well.. try spurs.. not huge ones we call cookie cutters but try smaller ones. That shoudl work.. and do you do nay work on a lunge line? dose he canter on a line? Maybe try and get someone to help you with this and it may seem liek something you would do if your just leanring, but your horse is not you.. so get a partner to help you and put your horse on the lunge line, get on your horse and have your partner holding the lien and try cantering on the line... your partner may have to use the lunge whip but try that and see how it goes..

Hey i used to have the same problem!! anyway i ride a horse that is very lazy and shes a trotting horse too! wat i do when i want to canter i (at a walk is better after you trooter he/she first) used my outside left heal and lift the horse up so it can canter! PLAN B: push your seat bone forward at the trot! PLAN C: use spurs or a crop!
