Thanks Patricia,
Very interesting and scary site.
It's amazing how many artificially sweetened products I have in my cupboard and fridge. for the sake of a few calories I have gone right off them now.
Better to be safe than sorry.

YOU ARE NOT KIDDING!!! I was a HEAVY user of Nutra Sweet / Aspartame products. The moment I found out about the 92 side effect (of which I probably had about 60 of them), I threw EVERYTHING that had Aspartame out. No more diet soda. No more equal in my coffee (which I hear now is the WORST THING). The most SHOCKING thing is that Slim Fast (which already has sugar in it) contains ASPARTAME! Can ANYONE please tell me why they would do that? If you are going to use sugar, why use Aspartame also? And now Smuckers is coming out with a sugar free (nutra sweet) jelly. They must be the dumbest people on earth. Look for them to go Chapter 11.

Don't forget to the dangers of food colourings and additives too.. such as MSG which is very prevalent in foods like low fat Rice Shapes, crackers etc.

http://www.woolworths.com.au/recipes/foodaddtives.asp

a good place to search for suspect additives etc.

This was exactly the issue I was wondering about when I asked in a recent post about artificially flavoured/low point yogurts vs. the same yogurt with a little more fat/points but no artificial sweeteners. I'm definitely going for healthy, rather than lowest point foods now.

Cheers,

Katie.

What the ??? (Insert "rove" impersonation here) :)

Is splenda in the bad artificial sweetner category? I thought it was safe?

I do know that Stevia is a natural sweetener that is safe, available at health stores, maybe you could try that Bron?

Linda.

Yeh! I thought that Splenda was OK too! Didn't explain why it was bad, I didn't think it had aspartame in it, but I guess, this guy is trying to ward people from any artificial sweetener!

Hi
splenda is bad 'cos it contains sucralose. They make it by replacing two of the molecules in sugar with chlorine molecules. This renders the sugar indigestible. you can check this website http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_dangers.htm in order to get more details about sucralose.
the best sugar substitute i've found so far is stevia. check out for maltodextrin in few stevia extraxt powders. its again bad for diabetics. pure stevia is the best substitute. its known to control diabetes too. most of them add maltodextrin while extracting. buy stevia without maltodextrin.

I went into this site and noticed that this person is recommending soy products as a healthy alternative to dairy. This really infuriates me as I am a thyroid disease sufferer and soy is really bad for people like me. It is not the healthy alternative that they say. I have proved this to myself. I tried to be a vegetarian and went on a low fat diet and used alot of soy. I was so sick I thought I would die. I went through years of various different problems especially digestive disorders. It is now proven that babies that have been given soy formula are getting thyroid problems later in life. I am very worried about my daughter who I gave soy formula to when she was a baby. I hope nothing happens to her. I have recently changed my diet to a low carb, high protein diet and feel like a new person. My doctor informed me that I have very high insulin in my blood and if I continue eating excess carbs and sugar I will be a diabetic very soon. So for me sugar is much more deadly than splenda. I will continue to use my splenda in moderation and not listen to anyone as it is not proven that it is bad for you especially those who recommend soy as a wonderfood. I am sorry that this message is so long but it really infuriates me when I read this kind of info.

Apparently Splenda has an amount of chlorine in it (used to get the sugar out). I did a search on 'dangers of splenda' and 'dangers of sucralose' in Ask Jeeves, and came up with some very interesting information.

The bottom line for me is that every single substance in the world has SOMEONE saying it is dangerous. Potatoes and tomatoes are genetically engineered. Vegemite gives you cancer, salt and caffeine and alcohol are deadly, Etc etc etc.

Of all of the sweeteners, Splenda seesm to have the least dangerous profile (except for stevia which I didn't like and it not easy to cook with). I'm going to keep using it, minimise my intake of aspartame based stuff, and not worry too much about it. As long as my decision is an informed one, and I have considered the risks and decided they are warranted in the circumstances, then I feel OK about it.

Maltodextrin is classified as a food additive by the FDA and so needs only be deemed SAFE by them in order to be added to everything, drugs, foods, natural foods, etc.and not listed as a sugar. The Glycemic Research Institute states that maltodextrin is 100%more fattening than table sugar and has a very high glycemic index/insulin response. Malrodextrin is the first ingredient in SPenda. As a nation of dieters and those combating a huge surge in type 2 diabetes we are being sabotaged.

Sounds OK Shashi! I figured it wasnt bad for the same reason, and occasionally a bit of aspartame won't be too bad. Esp when out socialising!!

I usually ask for a glass of "aspartame" instead of diet coke, my bf thinks it's a cack!

Just found this web site and thought I'd shed alittle light on what Nutra Sweet did to me... Age 20, started drinking diet Tab, about 6 cans a day. In 1985 diet coke was put on the market containing aspartame, drank 10 to 12 cans daily. Last year at age 39, diagnosed as borderline diabetic! Gave up diet coke and all nutra sweet products. 9 months later, with careful diet and limited natural sugar, my blood sugars are under control with out medicine! Think about that!!!

Linda, Linda, you poor lost soul.
10-12 cans of anything a day will not only affect your entire body but apparently has caused your brain to go too. This site seems to be for a bunch of organic natural food paranoid hypocondriacs. Splenda is great and a blessing for us diabetics. My blood sugar is under control too. Stevia SUCKS! It tasetes like you're eating weeds! I'll stick to my laboratory altered sugar..SPLENDA.
