Emäksisessä ympäristössä ammonium muuttuu ammoniakiksi, ja siis emäksisessä pysyy ammoniakkina elikkä kaasuna... haihtuu. Ja veteen liuennut ammonium pysyy ionimuodossa, jos liuos on hapan. Kyse on siis pitkälti samasta yhdisteestä Suomessa (väkilannoitteessa ja lannassa)ja USA:ssa
