Subject: Think I could do it?

I may have touched on this earlier (farming and such). Use of this vacant facility and the residence (not pictured) on the same property have been offered to me for at least temporary use (long-term/permanent, if I can find something fruitful (N.P.I.) to do with it). I've never farmed in my life - apart from a failed Chia Pet (not my fault, it was clearly a flaw in the design and construction of the Mr. T model Chia Pet), a couple of apartment aeroponic gardens for herbs/spices/cherry-tomatoes, accidental mold that grew on some couch pizza, flowers in my mother's garden when I was kid (though, I considered that forced child labor) and one low-maintenance marijuana plant that never budded in the time I owned it - I think it was male. We butterized it.

5 acres, 3 of which are open crop land. The rest are four very large greenhouses, a nice sized ranch home and a couple random large shacks for farming equipment I guess. My interest is only the greenhouses as farming the cropland would be a major operation and i'm certain i'd be way over my head. This place used to be a rare orchid nursery and is equipped for such in the green houses, but the previous owner assured us that it could easily be used for food growth - particularly if we grew in pots.

Gallery of the Farm

I had initially joked several months ago with the owner that, with Illinois' upcoming legalization of the growing and distribution of medical Marijuana, I could use it to grow... pending the highly unlikely possibility that the state of Illinois would grant me one of the 22 available growing licenses.

I've actually been studying growing "hardy" greens in the winter, and am trying to read a couple of books on the subject (Winter Harvest Handbook and The New Organic Grower) - though both seem to be targeted at people already familiar with farming. Also, since i'd primarly be one of only maybe two people actually farming, i've been looking into "Aquaponics" as it seems that it's much lower maintenance (meaning less labor intensive) than traditional farming.

For some reason, I was under the impression that there were a few farmers here, or people that might be familiar with it. Is it hard? Do you think a totally gangsta city boy can re-invent himself and make it on a farm? As far as a timeline is concerned, I haven't been given any ultimatums of course, but I'd consider myself a failure if I wasn't harvesting "something" for either personal use or business by 2015.
