Thanksgiving.....a time for reflection

I think this year Thanksgiving will be even more special than in years past. Since September 11, I think we have all reflected back on our way of life and found that it is precious....and that we don't wish to lose it.....that we are even willing to go to war in order to preserve it.

So use this topic to post the things you're thankful for during this month of November....and even share your Thanksgiving traditions with us....or your plans for the upcoming holiday.

I LOVE THANKSGIVING!!!! Echoing all the lofty ideals already posted. I am indeed Thankful for all that I have.

But since the sun rises and sets on my _ _ _ Thanksgiving means so much more to me, It's personal, It's my BIRTHDAY week! Yep, once every 7 years (leap year screws it up) my actual birthday falls on THE day (not this year but close) Regardless my birthday is always celebrated on Thanksgiving and since my near and dear are together no one ever forgets. LOL

Very very Thankful that I was premature and not born a month later, would undoubtably been named Holly, Merry, or Noelle, (not to offend anyone with these great names but just not me, LOL)
Besides would probably get only 1 present for both occasions and after all , It is all about ME!

Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday, right behind Christmas. Sometimes I go home for Thanksgiving, since my b'day (like baby blue's...falls during Thanksgiving week...gotta love that cornbread stuffing in the south)....but this year I'm staying in New York and having dinner in my own home....with 11 other guests.

I really get "into" it...making little pine cone turkeys for each place setting and the place cards are written in gold on brown parchment paper and stuck into the individual turkeys. I also ordered little Godiva pumpkins from the Godiva site online for each place setting. And I hollow out a big pumpkin to place a fall arrangement of flowers in for the centerpiece...and of course, candles...both on the table and all around the house...LOVE candles. The mantle is deorated with bittersweet which I climbed a TREE for out in the woods and the fall gourds and mini pumpkins. I pull out my great grandmother's china, which I only use at Thanksgiving and Christmas....very plain with just a gold rim...and the tablecloths are plain white with fall colored silk table runners and matching napkins.

The hors d'vourves are few...but filling...jumbo gulf shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, cheese & crackers and a veggie/fruit platter. And I'll also have a punchbowl filled with Block Island Fog...a rich punch made with strong coffee, ice cream and coffee liquer. And there will be hot spiced cider in the crock pot with apple schnapps available and cinnamon sticks.

The menu is pretty standard...turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, brussel sprouts, fresh cranberry salad, waldorf salad, sweet potato souffle, baby carrots with a honey glaze, veggie casserole, broccoli casserole, scalloped corn.

I only ask my guests to bring the wines, both white and red...and they always bring little "gifts" for the hostess also...LOVE opening those!

Desserts are apple and pumpkin pies and also a "Nantucket" pie with cranberries, along with a chocolate/walnut torte and a selection of Italian pastries (the pastries are from the Italian bakery). Also available are various liquers to have along with the coffee.

The only tradition I really brought from home besides the decorations and recipes....are that right before dinner we all join hands for a prayer....then each person tells what they're most thankful for.

Lots of preparation....lots of clean-up....but well worth the effort!

in Canada, while we celebrate Thanksgiving (earlier in October, guess 'cause it's colder and harvest comes early? or did the Pilgrims just arrive there earlier?), it doesn't have the intensity that its American counterpart does. so this year, i spent my thanksgiving with her.

strong time for family, seeing those things in one's life to give thanx for, to feel the worth of having been alive, for example, seeing the light of life instilled in a daughter, or a son, or any other loved one. to have had impact on another, positive and warming, to feel that sense of having touched the life of one or more ... in the end, isn't that what self-worth is all about.

a different year for me, a change between Thanksgivings, this one coming and the last one past. a long relationship gone, a better one begun with a sweet, genuine lady, an American of the southwest. and i have been warmed by her touch and her look, and also been blessed with the laugh and gaze thru two big, brown eyes of a young lady, learning of love, by watching her mother.

and when i give thanx, it is for the joy and the peace, the empathy and passion, and the honesty and faith that she has painted my life with. for when i had thought i had understood what Love is, when i had been resigned to not feeling that for which i knew was out there, but had never truly felt, she came into my life with a patience and openess that marked a journey to my dreams.

for that, i am thankful, and over the course of this holiday, my thoughts will be in that space, knowing that within a week, i will hold her in my arms again, and once again be able to talk to her with my eyes, my heart, and my soul.

for in getting closer to her, i have gotten closer to me, and i have never felt freer in going there.

so thanx, dear one. let me give you all that i am?

Thanksgiving by silky blonde lady

in the springtime of my days
sheer innocence, for all was new
encompassing the world thru my gaze
all was fresh as morning dew

summer would come before too long
a little wiser in adventures sought
inside this little girl grew strong
expressing views of independant thought

summer would last much longer too
simmering passions now overflowed
experimentations and headstrong views
"do your thing" was the code

in the beginning of autumn I analyze
all the colors and weaves of my living
a wild kaladiescope I realize
for this I give pure THANKSGIVING

Fall will last a long long time
i relish in all the beauty i see
this is the age that's most sublime
for wisdom has become reality

When reaching the winter of my days
i will reflect upon seasons in quiet rapture
surely the years will have passed in a haze
treasuring the memories I've captured

WOW!...my 2nd post...I'm getting guts here...lol...Thought I'd take leggy's lead and share a few recipes with everyone, but first let me say I buy my turkeys from Schwan's...best turkey you'll ever put in ur mouth...pure turkey breast in it's own cooking bag and makes it's own gravy...it's to die for ....ummmmmmmmmm

Now the recipes...

Buttermilk Pie

1 1/2 cups suger
1 Tbsp flour
1 tsp vanilla
3 whole eggs
1/2 cups buttermilk
2/3 stick matgarine, melted

Mix ingredients and bake in pie shell for about an hour @ 350 degrees

Fast & Easy Cheesecake (this is actually a pie and i have no idea how it acquired the name cheesecake, but oh well....go figure...lol)

2 8oz. phily cream cheese
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 - 1/2 cup lemon juice (to taste)
1 graham cracker pie crust

Mix ingredients till smooth and creamy, pour in pie crust...chill 1 hour

Diet Pumpkin Pie (this tastes really good, believe it or not...and just think of the calories ur saving...lol...not that we're counting them

2 cups canned pumpkin
2 cups water
1 cup low-fat milk powder(equal to 4 cups low-fat milk)
2 eggs
Sugar substitute equal to 3/4 cups brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp ground cloves

Mix all ingredients
Pour into a 9-inch glass pie pan sprayed with non-stick spray
Bake @ 350 for 1 hour or untill knife inserted comes out clean

Why do I get the feeling this should be called "Pumpkin Custard"?...must be the absence of the pie shell...lol...and btw, sweet potatoes can be substituted for those who prefer it

Well, I'd better run...I'm running late on my Thanksgiving shopping, not that that's anything unsual for me...Just wanna say, I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving...and thx so much for inviting me here
