Rachelle Ann: Star soars, school suffers
By Cris O. Ramos Jr.

LAST March, 17-year-old Rachelle Ann Go was one of the 10 hopefuls included in the finals of the television talent show Search for a Star. When the dust finally settled, it was the San Beda College student who stood tall winning the grand prize of P1 million and a recording contract with Viva Entertainment. What followed was a roller coaster ride of singing appearances that culminated with her joining the winners of other TV singing competitions in Night of the Champions before a sold-out crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

But all that success came with a heavy price. “It was already our finals week in school nung palapit na yung heat of the competitions,” Rachelle relates. “Understandably, my professors can’t give me special favors, so I decided to drop out because an opportunity like Search for a Star doesn’t come out everyday while college will always be there.”

And what did her professors say about that? “That’s what they also said!” says Rachelle with a smile.

Now, Rachelle braces herself for another challenge with the release of her self-titled debut album. The album brings to fruition the many hours she spent in singing lessons as a child and her experiences joining amateur singing contests. The album symbolizes the fulfillment of her dream to become a singing star. The day of the champion has indeed arrived.

Produced by Eugene Villaluz alongside some talented names in the local music industry, Rachelle’s self-titled debut showcases her remarkable song styling and her wide vocal range. The album appropriately begins with “When You Find Your Voice,” a song about finding the right avenue to express your feelings and thoughts to the fullest. One-man hit factory Vehnee Saturno contributes “From the Start” and “Stay in Love with You.” Arthur Madrigal chipped in the only Tagalog song in the album entitled “Kung Alam Mo Lang.” Melvin Morallos came up with “Love Won’t Let Us Be.” Former Neocolours member and seasoned musical collaborator Jimmy Antiporda composed, arranged and produced two R&B-flavored songs for Rachelle Ann, the ballad “Here I Am Again” and “Give It All.”

Rachelle Ann’s singing prowess is further put to the test with attempts to put an original stamp on some old favorites. Leading the arsenal covers is Rachelle Ann’s own take of South Border’s “Love of My Life,” as arranged and produced by South Border’s chief songwriter Jay Durias. She also recorded two compositions of the late Peter Allen, “Don’t Cry Out Loud” and “We Wanted It All.” The latter was recorded as a duet with rising star Christian Bautista. Other classics covered in the album include “Dreaming of You” by the late Latina diva Selena, Rachelle Ann’s Search for a Star winning piece “Through the Rain” (originally by Mariah Carey) and “Solitaire” by Neil Sedaka. Rachelle Ann initially laughed at the idea of recording the latter after Viva had her listening to the original version (“Ano ba yan, nung panahon pa ng kopong-kopong yung kanta na yon,” she quipped) but loved the song after hearing her own version.

Truly, Rachelle Ann Go still has a long way to go, which is why she isn’t so excited about catching the acting bug like fellow singing champion Sarah Geronimo. “Enjoy muna ako sa singing,” she says. “This is what I’ve always dreamed of, after all.”

mmJun posts:

Rachelle Ann! You stopped going to school?! Boy, is she
going to be in trouble with Regine Velasquez. The Song Bird
also stopped her schooling before and it has been one of
her few regrets for not finishing it. Regine mentioned
something in an article recently about Sarah Geronimo
not paying as much attention to her school too. Tsk, tsk..

You in trouble, Girl..
lolz. (just kidding)

Its Viva.. Rachelle's management that Regine should cap on.

But I like to do it first before her. I didn't like
that one poster of them (group recent Dome concert)
where all of them weren't smiling. You'd think they
got big headed and arrogant. The poster of them on
the front of this group is great poster. Look
at those smiles! Viva. Sus..

Anyway. Greetings to the members of this Rachelle Ann
mailing list. I'm Jun Manalang. And if her CD turns
out to be as good as the media push is saying it is
then I'll be posting her fan web sites, forums and
mailing lists in the Music Inside Buzz.

So fans are encourage to help keep the site informed
and updated on any of her latest music news for
posting there.

Cool?

mmJun :-)
