I'm not up with the chemical stuff, but through my own experience, I have concluded the nicest and cheapest way to change the colour of a boat is to use that plastic contact from a hardware store.

The stuff people cover shelves and things with: it comes in a few colours and is about $6m (I think) I used insulation tape and ductape on the edges of the contact to stop it peeling up. If you don't tape down the edges it comes off really easily.

I had black contact on my kevlar boat(no gelcoat only clear resin) for about a year and 1/2. The contact stayed on really well and looked tidy: it didn't scratch much and also didn't add much weight at all (bear this in mind when selecting paint)

My next boat was sanded lightly and sprayed with enamal spray paint from a can (Cam butler might confirm this as he did it in my garage :o)
It was ok, but did seem to rub off a little on other peoples boats (not flakes though)
