New Zealand rules have a provision in them that allows players to have paddles of 4mm thickness rather than 5mm (as in ICF rules). This is primarily to allow club members to use the old plastic paddles so readily available at clubs. The main point to this, is that the composite paddles are actually very expensive. If we want to encourage people to play our sport, then we can't expect them to buy a composite paddle when the rules clearly already try to protect us from injury.

Referees should make certain that any paddles with sharp edges or tips do no make it onto the pool. People who are considerate will tape the edges of their paddles anyway- surely people haven't forgotten how to do this? In addition to this, referees should be calling paddle fouls or dangerous play as soon as it happens. You shouldn't have to be hit, to get a call in your favour.

(In my opinion!!)
