none of mine have ever broken down to the extent that they couldn't be fixed by either a twig, some string, wire or a kick but...

the 65 Devon had a fault that I traced to the coil...the bus would brake down at traffic lights or on roundabouts and it wouldn't restart until the coil had cooled enough...but it always went.

I've had snapped cables as well and suggest the following as super rough ways of getting you home.

Throttle cable: jam the carb open with a twig

Clutch cable: simply shove your gearstick really hard until after loads of nasty grinding sounds there's a thwak and you're away :)

Handbrake cables: jam a brick under a rear wheel or both wheels if you have two bricks :)

There is one AA van over here but I think it's been broken down for year...I'm not a member but with the above on my CV I may get a job with them :)
