I used to have a 1679 motor in my fastback (when it was actually on the road about 5 years ago!!) that was similar. It wasnt fast enough though so i rebuilt it as a 1776 then took the car off the road and sold the motor.

Anyway ity had 009, blue coil, stock leads, ignitor module, stock heads with stainless valves and a slight cleanup on the ports, 110 engle, lightened flywheel, 1700lb kennedy clutch, bugpack header with single quiet pack, stock heat exchangers, for carbs i had a pair of Kadrons with the old steel manifolds that arent available anymore cut down and welded back together, and a modified linkage, no air filters whatsoever as there was about 5mm between the carb tops and the engine cover.

It was............. quicker than a 1600 stocker but nothing mental and definitly nothing like as fast as a bug with the same motor. In my opinion, if youre going to build the motor from scratch then make it as big as you can afford straight away. Go on build it big........
