At FSB Copperhead-every last man got drunk on pink champagne which resulted in mass vomiting-Charlie missed his chance that night!

We were in the process of building this firebase after having made a "strategic retreat" off of FB 29 where the NVA had us zeroed in and were pounding us every day. I was still pretty new and was scheduled to go on my first 'slurp' on Thanksgiving Day. I was a little nervous and hadn't given much thought to the holiday except to think of all the folks at home and how I wished I could be with them.
We went up to the mess bunker and there I saw an amazing sight...guys leaving with plates piled high with just about every kind of food that is associated with the traditional Holiday dinner! I also saw that the officers were serving the meal and having a great time doing so!
I have always had a sentimental streak and the combination of this great meal and the officers serving us first, warmed the cockles of my heart. It was one of the nicest things that happened during my tour of duty and I have never forgotten it.
Of course, I had to 'saddle up' and go out on my first slurp just a bit later, but that just made the day even more memorable! Vietnam was often like that, I guess all the hell made us really appreciate the good times in between...but that meal was above and beyond what I had expected on Thanksgiving Day on a firebase in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
