I received a head injury so I was unaware of what all took place there. I would like to contact anyone who survived that encounter. I went out on 3 patrols daily so someone should remember me.

>>While serving with "C" Company 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division in the Thua Thien Province area. Dark was coming towards us faster than a speeding bullett...we/our unit commander decided to dig in for the night. We had happened upon a trenchline (19 May 1966) pre-existing that headquarters made their CP. Dumb Move on their part. (As, I'm sure that that trenchline was already zeroed in bye our foe.) We were providing security for two(2) tanks. At approx. 0430 on 20 May 1966 the North Vietnamese regulars came out of the mountains to the West and hit us with all their might. Coming at us under 60mm Mortar fire using their whistles, bells and horns for directions. We lost 7 good men that morning with like amount of enemy dead. Two of the KIA were from the machine gun squad I was with. Cpl. Joseph Serna and Pfc. Michael Gatwood...also WIA from machine guns was Pfc. Marshall Poth. The North Vietnames regulars broke off the engagemnt just before sunrise and DIDI'ed out of there. Around 0900-0930 Gen. Westmorland flew in on a helicopter for his PR hand shakes and (I suppose an award) for himself for being there. Before or during covering up of our dead. Made me ill to see him standing there with that smug smile on his face.
God rest my friends and their families.

Well because we worked ships in the harbor we had Turkey's a lot of them that we where able to get off of a Refir.ship 2 day's before Thanksgiving so we had a great dinner. I think we had more Turkey's that anyone else in QuiNhon that year we had other Company's using our messhall for dinner so it was pretty good.

We were on a few days stand down and had a great meal....turkey with all the trimmings! It was a time when a few days without extreme pressure felt good. There were showers to be had, letters to write, time for some uninterupted sleep, a time to think about home. Two days later we would be back on search and destroy missions. The war goes on.

Spent Thanksgiving on USNS Daniel I. Sultan with C Co, 2/3d Infantry (Old Guard), 199th Light Infantry Bde, enroute to Vung Tau and ultimately Long Binhn and the boonies. We dined on Turkey, etc, while trying to keep our metal meal trays from sliding off the table as the Pacific was a little rough that day. Indeed, seas were rough most of the 21 or so day trip. We pulled KP duty in the galley every other day. Never wanted to go on a ship again until my wife made me go on a cruise over 30 years later.
