Apprehension

Her voice was hoarse from repeated warnings.
In the distance their guns rang out
slaps of sharp insistence, serious and deadly.

He had slipped out the back door
when they came; she had always known
he was part shadow, just the way

he was with her one instant,
and the next, flown
like a mote of innocuous dust.

By the time they checked her eyes for lying,
he was nowhere near
where she knew he should have been.

But in the end it was as easy as that:
a door answered, bringing
an end to her apprehension

that one day he would fail to be
enough of a shadow;
just an apprehended man.
