CHAPTER 13

I didn’t know I could scare that easily, but needless to say, Justin did quite the job. Here I was, thinking he was passed out for the night, alcohol induced, of course, and all of a sudden he pops up and yells surprise. I think it was a combination of fear, shock, surprise, and anger that made me instinctively slap him across the face.

“What the hell do you mean surprise,” I asked angrily.

“What the hell did you slap me for?” He rubbed his check lightly.

“JUSTIN!”

“Okay, relax. I faked being drunk. None of the guys know, just you. I knew Brit would be pissed if I came home plastered so it was the only way I could be with you without anyone being suspicious. But I guess you don’t want to be with me, considering the warm welcome I got,” he said. I looked at him in disbelief. Did he completely ignore our conversation from lunch? But what made me really think was the fact that he went through so much trouble an effort to be with me. Of course that made my entire resolve crumble to the ground. I walked back over to the bed, bent down and gently kissed his cheek.

“I’m sorry I slapped you. You scared me half to death. It was just the way I reacted, you know I didn’t mean it.”

“Well I should have known better. I guess all things considered, I deserve it.”

“Yeah, you do.” I smiled as he looked at me with an open mouth and wide eyes.

“Hey!”

“Hey yourself,” I said, my smile growing.

“What have I got to do to get some lovin’ around here,” he asked.

“Just ask.”

“Can I get some lovin,” he asked with a grin. I rolled my eyes as he made his cheesy request. Before I could answer, he pulled me down onto the bed with him.

A few hours later, I felt Justin running his hand along the side of my face. I opened my eyes and smiled. He smiled back.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“It’s okay. It’s kinda nice to wake up with you still here.”

“I know the feeling.”

“Justin, what the hell are we doing,” I asked for the millionth time it seemed like.

“Playing with fire, as you put it earlier.” Indeed we were.

The next day, after apologizing profusely to Brit and a promise to make it up to her, JC found Justin.

“Hey Justin, got a few minutes to spare. I wanted to talk to you,” he asked casually.

“Yeah, sure JC. Is everything okay?”

“Oh yeah, I just wanted to talk to ya alone so let’s go to my room,” JC said.

“Sure Jace.” They headed over to JC’s room and JC was praying Justin couldn’t see him sweating bullets. He was a bit nervous about what he was gonna say to Justin. But it had to be said now, before something very bad happened.

“Justin, what I’m gonna say is hard. But I have to. You’re my little brother and I’ve got to look out for you.”

“Okay…” JC sighed. When had Justin grown up? He remembered the first time they really had the ‘talk’ – everything from girls and why they act the way they do to the do’s and don’ts of about sex. Justin was so innocent, and even now, though he’s in over his head, there’s still that innocent air to him, but it was clear he had truly matured the most out of all five of them.

“I know what’s going on. I know you weren’t drunk last night. I saw you dump your drinks after taking a sip from them. More importantly, I saw you and Sonali kissing way back in Boulder.” Justin looked straight ahead and sighed. He was afraid to look at his big brother and see nothing but disappointment over his face. When he finally found the courage to look at JC, Justin saw nothing but concern. Justin sighed.

“Josh, I don’t know what I’m doing. Does Sonali know you know?”

“Yeah, I confronted and comforted her the day Brit came in. Justin, you know what you’re doing is wrong and unfair to both of them.”

“I know. I am so confused JC. I mean, am I naïve for thinking that Brit was the only girl I’d ever love? That we were meant to be? We were soulmates? That eventually we’d get married and live happily ever after?”

“No, Justin, not at all. You’re not naïve in thinking those things at all. But are you trying to tell me you have feelings for Sonali too?”

“Of course I do. I’m not just sleeping with her for fun. When I’m with her, I feel things I don’t feel with Brit. But Brit makes me feel other things I don’t feel when I’m with Sonali. I just don’t know how I really feel, or what I really feel, towards Sonali. Do the other guys know?”

“I don’t think so. I mean, I haven’t said anything to them. But sooner or later, everyone will find out. EVERYONE.”

“I know. What am I gonna do?”

“That, Justin, is a decision you’re going to have to make on your own. But as much as I promised Sonali I wouldn’t confront you, I had to break it in order to help you from going insane. You know I am always gonna be here for you, so if you need to talk about this some more, I’m here, no matter what I’m doing. You can even wake me up when I’m sleeping. But like I said, Justin, you – and only you – can make that decision, and it needs to be made soon.”

“Oh my god, Sonali, what the hell is that,” Brit exclaimed. I gave her a strange look as she pointed at me, eyes wide.

“What?”

“THAT!” She pointed to my neck. I didn’t have to see to know what she was talking about as I started freaking out, running over to the mirror to see how bad the damage was. Sure enough, there was a big old hickey on my neck. I was turning every shade of red imaginable, feeling like I was in high school again. I realized Brit was trying not to burst with curiosity. I was trying to think of a lie to tell her. Surely I couldn’t have told her that it was a gift from HER boyfriend.

“This stays between me and you. There’s no way ANY of the guys can find out.”

“Promise,” she said with a grin.

“There’s absolutely nothing going on. As bad and unprofessional as this sounds, we just messed around a little and that’s it.”

“SONALI!”

“If you harass JC, I’ll kick your ass.”

“Eeeek! I knew it!”

“Calm down, relax,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“What’s going on,” Justin asked as he and JC walked in. Wonderful. This was the beginnings of my punishment for being such a horrible person.

“NOTHING,” I said way too fast and way too loud for it to be dropped.

“Nope. Don’t buy it. C’mon,” JC said. Brit started giggling and I shot her a nasty look.

“What’s so funny,” Justin asked. Now she had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing.

“Nothing. I have no idea what’s wrong with her,” I said as I casually placed my hand on my neck, pretending it was sore in an effort to cover up Justin’s masterpiece.

“Is your neck bothering you? I can give you a massage,” JC offered. That was all it took for Brit to let loose and completely burst out in complete hysterics. I threw my hands up in frustration.
“You certainly can give her more than that,” Brit managed to get out between her fits of laughter. Justin’s eyes widened when he saw my neck and JC looked at me, confused. Then he saw my neck as well as my look of plea on my face. He gave me a reassuring nod and then I looked at Justin and swallowed hard. He knew it was his doing and was trying to hide his fear.

“Joshua Chasez, what the hell is going on,” Justin asked, as he put his best acting skills to the test.

“Justin, man, it’s nothing. We were being dumb, there’s absolutely nothing going on. And the others don’t need to hear about this,” I said, answering for JC.

“We won’t say anything if you two come to dinner with us tonight,” Brit said with a mischievous glimmer in her eye. She crossed her arms over her chest, knowing she had won this argument because there was NO way I would let any of the guys hear about this, even if it was a lie. I looked at Jace who just looked back at me, shrugging his shoulders.

“Fine,” I said sighing. I grabbed my stuff and headed to my room. Five minutes later, JC knocked on my door. I let him in, already prepared for an ass whoopin.

“You know, I think as a way to thank me, I should actually get to give you a damn hickey,” JC said.

“I am SO SORRY! I didn’t even know about it until she pointed it out. Jace, seriously, I am really sorry.”

“Why me? Why my name?”

“You were the first name that came to my mind.”

“Does that mean if you weren’t interested in Justin, I’d have a chance,” JC asked with a grin. I rolled my eyes and smiled. I hugged him and gave him a peck on the cheek.

“Thank you,” I said.

“You’re welcome. Boy, Justin sure did a good job. I taught him well.” We both cracked up.
