CHAPTER 6

I stopped and looked at him. He ran his hand over his head and sighed.

“Are you okay,” I asked.

“ No. I feel horrible. I’ve been nothing but an ass to you ever since day one. That’s not the real me,” he said softly. I was surprised to say the least. Finally I managed to overcome my shock and find my voice.

“Of course I know that’s not the real you.”

“Huh?”

“I see how close you are with the guys. I’m not stupid and I’m not blind,” I said with a smile.

“I honestly don’t know why I’ve been such an ass. I mean, I’ve just gotten burned so many times in the past being Mr. Nice Guy to strangers. I guess I decided to be Mr. Ass instead in hopes of not getting burned but that backfired pretty fast. I fucked up big time and I really am truly sorry.”

“Justin, I understand where you’re coming from. Besides, I wasn’t exactly Ms. Sunshine with you, either. I guess I owe you an apology as well.”

“Don’t even think I’m gonna accept that apology from you,” he said with a grin. For the very first time since I had started working with the guys, I saw a genuine smile from Justin meant for me, and me alone. I couldn’t help but return the smile with one of my own.

“So this means I have to share my left-overs with you, huh?”

“NO WAY! No more spicy food tonight, or ever, for that matter. I’m all about ice cream.” We both cracked up. Just then, there was a knock on the door and I went to answer it. I found the rest of the guys and Preeti on the other side.

“Sonali,” Lance questioned, making sure he had the right room.

“Oh my god, she finally killed him. JC’s the new heartthrob now,” Chris joked. I rolled my eyes and everyone started laughing. I opened the door wider so everyone could see a very much alive Justin in the room, laughing at Chris’s comment.

“Aww man, he’s still here. I was dying to be the single heartthrob,” JC joked. I busted out laughing with everyone else.

“Um, guys, I just wanted to say sorry about my tantrum back at the restaurant,” Justin said, quieting everyone down.

“Whatever man. Forget about it. Besides in a couple of hours, you’ll be a lot more sorry,” Joey said, making us all crack up again. We headed into Justin’s room and sat down.

“God, it’s so good to be around another girl,” I said, hugging Preeti. She laughed.

“Hey now, we’re not that bad,” JC said.

“I know, but I was beginning to find it a turn on whenever any of you belched,” I joked.

“Yeah baby, we knew we’d get to you sooner or later,” Joey joked. We all started laughing.

“So, uh, Sonali, you’re a dancer, I hear,” Lance said.

“No,” I said flatly.

“Yes,” Preeti said. I sighed.

“I used to dance back in high school and it was for cultural programs only,” I said explaining to the guys, whose grins were growing by the moment.

“Any chance we can see one of these dances,” Justin asked flashing me his grin for the second time that night.

“HEY! Does anyone else hear the theme from the Twilight Zone? Justin and Sonali are actually getting along,” Chris yelled. I rolled my eyes and Justin smacked him upside the head.

“You’re a dumbass,” I said.

“What? It’s true, I actually think I hear the theme. Anyone else,” Chris questioned, looking around the room.

“I hear it,” JC said.

“Ditto,” Lance said.

“Dude, I want some ice cream,” Joey said. We all looked at him and cracked up.

“Welcome to my world,” I said to Preeti.

“Oh my god, they’re hilarious,” Preeti said.

“Oh this is nothing. They’re actually behaving because you’re here,” I said.

“Okay, enough with the bashing. We’re ordering ice cream and then we’re gonna see Sonali and Preeti shake their groove thang for us,” Chris announced.

“Oh god, what did I get myself into,” Preeti asked, wide-eyed.

“You have no idea,” I said with a grin.

“The same one from high school?”

“Yeah, I have to get the CD. It’s in my room, so I’ll be right back,” I said getting up. JC followed me, anxious to know what exactly happened between me and Justin. As soon as we were in the hallway, he fired away.

“Alright, detailed explanation is needed. What the hell was in that concoction of yours?” I smiled.

“Nosy much?”

“Sonali! C’mon!”

“There’s not a whole lot to tell. I waited patiently while he refused to let me help him, but then he eventually caved in. As I was making my way out, he stopped me and this sincere apology came pouring out of him. I was shocked because I wasn’t expecting it but then I apologized as well for being so difficult. He wouldn’t hear of it and told me he didn’t accept it because I had every reason to act the way I did. As weird as it is, the abrupt shift in our attitudes towards one another doesn’t seem like it’ll be weird, if that makes sense. I mean, we’re both the type of people to let bygones be bygones.”

“I knew he’d open his eyes. I’d like you to meet the real Justin Timberlake,” JC said with a smile. I smiled back.

“Okay, I got my CD, let’s head back. I can’t believe I’m gonna do this,” I said.

“If you don’t want to dance, then don’t,” JC said.

“Yeah okay Jace. You know the guys wouldn’t let me off the hook that easy. I’ve come to realize that it’s easier to just give into you guys every now and then.”

“You’re a quick learner,” JC said. I smacked him and we made our way back into the room with the others.

“Okay, let me explain the song since I highly doubt any of you understand Hindi. It’s a girl singing about what she wants in a man – someone to treat her right, pamper her, basically treat her like a princess. It also deals with what she has to offer and how she’s worth being treated the way she wants to be treated. That’s basically it. I’m not gonna translate it word for word,” I explained. Preeti started laughing and I put the CD in the player and waited for the music to start. At first I was nervous and couldn’t look at any of the guys, but soon I got more into it and enjoyed it for what it was worth. We were out of breath by the end of it but smiling because the guys were clapping and cheering. I went over and turned the CD off.

The reason I was so hesitant to do it was because I didn’t know what the guys would think. It’s not like I was embarrassed by my culture, but it’s very complicated and different from theirs. It was one thing to take them to a restaurant but another to open up and actually show them how much I really appreciated my own heritage as cheesy as it sounded. I was wrong about what the guys would think – not that I thought they were close-minded, but it was certainly different. I had really put myself out there, but it was worth it.

“Whoa, ladies, I am impressed. That was beyond cool,” Lance said.

“Yeah, I didn’t know hips could move like that,” Chris said.

“Shut up,” I said, getting embarrassed by the moment.

“No, seriously. When Brit meets you, you have to show her some of those moves. She’d love it,” Justin said.

“Speaking of Brit, isn’t she coming to visit soon,” JC asked.

“Yeah, in Minneapolis on Wednesday next week,” Justin said, beaming at the mention of his girlfriend.

“How long is she staying,” Joey asked.

“Dunno, at least a week. At least,” Justin said.

“Well guys, Preeti and I are gonna gossip and girl talk, so we’ll be in the lobby,” I said.

“Alright, we’ll see you tomorrow, right,” Joey asked.

“Of course, thanks again for that,” Preeti said. I looked at them, confused since I had obviously missed something.

“Backstage passes for the show tomorrow night, DUH,” Chris said.

“You know, I’m about to kick your ass,” I said.

“See how she talks to her employers,” Chris said. Preeti laughed.

“Bye guys. See you tomorrow,” she said.

“I have my phone if you need anything,” I said as I shut the door. Preeti and I talked for a good two hours in the lobby. I explained the situation between me and Justin and she told me about what was going on with her. Finally, we both said goodnight and made plans for the next day.
