CHAPTER 9

We had been on the road again for a week, still feeling completely refreshed from our mini-break. Tomorrow was CFTC and we were all excited. Not only was this going to be a great opportunity to give back, it was going to be fun and it was in Vegas. We had decided to lay low tonight in our rooms since the first day of games was tomorrow. There was a huge after-party planned and then Sunday was the actual game and Sunday evening, the guys were going to be in concert.

“Lance, can you grab me another towel please,” I yelled from the bathroom. I was sharing a room with Lance this time around.
“Sure, hang on,” he said.

“Thank you sir,” I said as I wrapped it around my head. I had another one wrapped around me.

“So how badly would you hurt me if I were to accidentally yank this towel off,” he asked as he playfully pulled on the bottom of the towel wrapped around me.

“Bad enough that you wouldn’t be able to carry on the Bass name.”

“Okay then,” he said as he sat down on the toilet seat. I started laughing.

“So what’s on your mind,” I asked after we had sat in silence and he watched me put moisturizer on and rinse my mouth out with mouthwash.

“You know me too well.”

“Of course I do. I’m only spending every minute with you boys.”

“Okay, I’ll tell you what’s bothering me if you tell me what’s bothering you.”

“I guess you know me pretty well, too?”

“Yup. That whole spending every minute with us works both ways.”

“Haha smartass. You first buddy.”

“Sarah. See, I like her – don’t know if I’m at the love stage and she’s the same way. It’s hard on us to be apart and I know that as much as she tries to hide it, I know she’s not happy. Which makes me unhappy. It’s so hard when we’re on tour to have a relationship. She works so I don’t expect her to quit and come with us. I don’t know what to do. Help!”

“Oh Lance, it must be really hard to have a stable relationship when you’re apart. Honestly, the way I think of it, you guys do like each other, but you don’t know if you love each other. You both are at a time in your life where you should have fun – date, all of that. Maybe you should take a break and have some fun until things calm down again. Then if it was meant to be, you guys can re-evaluate things and go from there. I mean, what’s the point of both of you being miserable? And when I say break, I don’t mean cut her out of your life altogether. Keep in touch, keep her in your life as a friend.” Lance soaked up my mini-speech and thought about the words.

“You know, I think you’re right. And I could never cut her out of my life completely. But I do think we need a break and see what happens while we’re apart. Thanks. You should become a therapist.”

“Ha! I don’t think so buddy.”

“Alright, so what’s on your mind?”

“Oh it’s nothing major. Just a single girl feeling the effects of being single. And I’m not mad, it’s a choice I’ve made for the time being, but well…nevermind, it’s stupid.”

“No! C’mon, tell me,” he said trying to get it out of me. I sighed.

“Alright. I’ve just been feeling the effects a lot more since Britney’s been here with Justin. I mean, she’s a total sweetie and I have nothing against her, but sometimes I let the little green monster known as jealousy rear its ugly head when I see how amazing they are together. I mean, they’ve got THE relationship.” Lance leaned back and smiled.

“I was waiting for this,” he said, his smirk getting bigger.

“Excuse me?”

“Well as in me, Chris, JC, and Joey have been waiting.”

“What the hell,” I said, getting more irritable.

“Calm down! What I mean is that there’s been a point for each of us where we’ve been envious of Justin and Brit. We’ve all bitched about it and so we were wondering when it’d hit you.” I was shocked and it showed.

“Oh. Does Justin know?”

“Nope. I mean, we’re like you – happy for them but still envious.”

“Okay, I don’t feel as stupid anymore.”

“Good. You shouldn’t. You’re human, Sonali. Emotions and feelings are allowed to be expressed.”

“Now who sounds like a therapist? Gimmie a hug and then get out so I can change. Oooh and will you order some fries?” Lance laughed.

“Sure,” he said as he hugged me and closed the door. I put my PJ’s on and came out to find everyone else in the room.

“Whoa. Hey all,” I said.

“Hey, we ordered some food and Joey found Twister,” JC said with a grin. I rolled my eyes.

“Oh and we also found these,” Chris said, holding a bottle of tequila in one hand and vodka in the other.

“Oh shit, this is gonna be an interesting night, isn’t it,” I said.

“Uh huh,” Brit said.

“Alright, let’s get this started,” Joey said, laying out the board.

“I wanna be spinner,” JC said.

“Okay, but what’s the deal with the alcohol? I mean, how do we figure out when to drink?”

“Oh, if it’s left hand green, a shot of vodka. Right foot blue is a shot of tequila. The first to fall has to do a shot of each.”

“I cannot believe we’re corrupting a children’s game,” I said.

“Oh puhlease. Don’t act all innocent Miss Kegstand,” Chris said. I started laughing. Just then room service brought in our food.

“Hey what’s this,” Justin asked as he pulled out a box wrapped in pink paper.

“It says your name on it,” JC said grinning.

“What? Gimmie that,” I said. I started to notice the others grinning as I opened it up. I gasped when I pulled out a blue and white jersey with my knickname DOLL on it and number 99.

“You better score at least one basket,” Joey said.

“You guys, I can’t believe this! I’m not a celebrity or an athlete, why should I play? More importantly, I suck at basketball.”

“You’re like one of us and that’s all that matters. We made up the rules. Just one basket is it,” Lance said.

“And look, we got you number 99 since you’re always acting like an old fart,” Chris said. Everyone started laughing. I got up and hugged everyone. After we ate, we got back to playing our game.

“Uh oh, left hand green – let’s do it,”JC said. We had a huge thing of dixie cups acting as mock shot glasses.

“Dude, Joey, get your ass outta my face,” Lance yelled. We all started laughing.

“I can made you lose right now,” Joey said.

“Oh yeah, how,” Lance questioned.

“Like this,” Joey said as he farted. We all burst out laughing hysterically.

“FUCK JOEY! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT! I’M GONNA KILL YOU DICKHEAD!” We all laughed so hard that we had tears coming down our faces. After JC and Justin tore the two apart, we continued on with our game until there was no more alcohol left. No one was drunk, we just all had great buzzes.

“You know, at the rate I’m going, by the time I’m 30, I won’t have a liver,” I joked. Everyone started laughing.

The next day flew by. It was crazy and chaotic with all the celebrities coming in and with the first day of games, which included an obstacle course, 3-point shoot out and a slam dunk contest. I met so many people that day, I thought my face would never look normal again with all the smiling I had been doing. It was a bit surreal when I took a break and noticed Shaq was to my left and Nelly was on my right. All of a sudden, Britney rushed over to me.

“Sonali, do you know what you’re wearing tonight?”

“Nope. Not a clue.”

“Oooh, can I dress you up like you did for me? Pleeeeeease?”

“Do you want to?”

“C’mon, time’s wasting away!” I laughed as she literally dragged me up to the hotel.

“Okay,” I said, laughing at how excited she was. She called someone and within half and hour, her hair and makeup guy was in our room.

“Okay, so I suck at hair and makeup but you are gonna be banging tonight. I’m gonna hop in the shower.” I laughed and sat down.

“You, darling, have amazing hair. How about we go stick-straight with the flat iron?”

“God bless your hands,” I said jokingly. I felt like a queen as David worked his magic. We talked and joked and before I knew it, my hair was so straight it could have doubled as a ruler. He did Brit’s hair and then Brit took me to her room where she had all her clothes.

“Are you sure about this? I doubt I’ll be able to fit into anything.”

“Shut up Sonali. I was thinking about this dress,” she said holding up a gold halter dress that fell to the middle of my thigh. I loved it and she knew it.

“Whoa. THAT’S a dress,” I said.

“I have one in silver, too, which I was gonna wear. We’d be twins!”

“Are you serious?”

“Yeah, let’s do it!”

“Okay, but you know we’re gonna both need some tape in the front to keep the twins covered.” We cracked up and by 8, we were ready and dressed. We looked hot and we knew it.

“The guys are on their way,” she said. We had David take our picture before he left. I was never gonna forget how amazing I felt in that dress. There was a knock and I went to answer it.

“Holy…wow…that’s quite a dress,” JC said, fumbling over his words.

“Damn, you look hott, with two t’s,” Joey said. I laughed.

“Thanks. Wait until you see Brit.” I smiled once the guys realized it was the same dress but in silver. That night, Brit and I knew we were the hottest girls there and while she insisted that she was having just as much fun as I was, I knew I had a little more than her because I was single.

The next day, I ended up making not one shot, but four. The Daze ended up wining. Afterwards, I stayed back with Johnny to help him with some paperwork. Justin rushed to get cleaned up so he could chill with Brit since she was leaving after the concert tonight. The other guys had headed back to the hotel as well.

“Thanks for your help, Sonali. There’s a car waiting to take you back to the hotel,” Johnny said.

“Okay, you sure you don’t need anything else?”

“No! Go relax you workaholic,” Johnny said playfully. I laughed and headed to gather up my stuff. I dug through my bag looking for my bottle and when I found it, I unscrewed the cap and popped two pills in my mouth.

“Sonali, what the hell are you doing,” Justin yelled, scaring the crap out of me. I jumped and turned to face a very angry Justin. I swallowed hard, not knowing what to do or say.
