Like books, I think that self-sensorship is much preferred to state-imposed standards. There's nothing on the 'net that I can't find out in society. It is simply reflected in a quicker, neater package in the 'net. If you don't want porn or colourful language, then install your own filter. And again, I can think of a few exceptions, such as hate literature (remember those arseholes at www.godhatesfags.com?) and kiddie porn. The governing bodies must assume that I, as an adult, am capable of deciding what I want to see on the net, without telling me what I can and can't handle. But ultimately, just like television, if you don't like what you see, turn it off. (forum's looking better, Miss P.)
So that brings me to another form of censorship. College speech codes. In light of hate crimes and such, the idea of speech codes have been brought up on campuses. Since you're not in favor of hateful lit., do you think a speech code should be implimented for the same reasons?
If you've never heard of speech codes, sorry. I haven't myself. This all is actually coming from an assignment I had to do for English. I had to pick one of the three issues that spoke to me most and write an arguement for, for or against. College speech codes, I guess would be a "list" of words that would be unacceptable on campus.
I don't agree with any form of censorship. That's not to say I think it's OK to yell, "Fire!" or "Bomb!" in a crowded movie theater. I just think the task of assigning the Government to "think" for us is ridiculous. Furthermore, I don't support any idea for speech codes on college campuses to eliviate "hate." What would that do, but assign a punishment for a particular word? I don't see that as being necessary. College campuses are full of adults, and they can be responsible for themselves without having a "list" of words that they aren't allowed to utter. THAT is getting into a Orwellian type of mind frame.
BTW, thanks. There's still a lot of things I don't like about it though, I don't know yet how to change the look of font to distinguish it from yours and so forth. Plus, I'm so "comfortable" over at CARM, I'm having a hard time adjusting to this one. But thanks for comin' on over! :)
