Subject: Because He Lives!

The foundation of all of the promises of God rest upon Christ. If Christ is not who he claimed to be, then all that we have trusted in is nothing by empty, dead religion.

In 1 Cor. 15 Paul is discussing the importance of the resurrection of Christ.
"And if Christ is not raised, your faith is vain (useless); and you are yet in your sins. Then they also which have fallen asleep in Christ are perished. If only in this life we have hope we are of all people most miserable" (1Cor.15: 17-19)

Why is the resurrection of Christ so important?

First, if Jesus did not raise from the dead, he is a liar. He said " Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it up again. No man taketh it from me, I have the power to lay it down and I have power to take it up again" (John 10:17-18)

Secondly, the divine satisfaction of God in the sacrifice of Christ is seen in that he raised Christ from the dead. When in those lone and dreadful hours on the cross, in the darkness from the sixth to the nineth hour, Jesus bore the judgment of a holy and righteous God who laid our sins upon him. It was at the end of those dark hours that Jesus cried a loud cry of victory "It is Finished"(John 19:30) In other words he had completed the work which he came to do. He was buried. However in fulfilment of scripture "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (hades); neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption" Psalms 16:10 He was raised triumphantly from the dead!

Paul could write with joy; "But now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that slept. (1 Cor.15:20) In other words he was the first to be raised in an immortal body and because of this, those who have trusted him will also one day be raised.

The resurrection of Christ is a great joy to those who know him. However, his resurrection is a message to the whole world, that he is whom he claimed to be the eternal Son of the eternal God.

Our sure hope is in him.

Robert
