He knew his pace stressed his horse past the limits of normal endurance, but couldn’t stop himself. She was a slave. Her loss meant nothing to him. “Slow down.” Mikelle turned toward the sound of Anthony’s voice and tugged on the reins. Anthony matched his slower pace and continued. “What’s the rush? You have some pressing business I’m unaware of?” “It’s time we were home, that’s all. I’ve been away too long and need to get back.” “And this has nothing to do with the slave girl?” “The runaway?” Anthony ejected a suspicious cough. “As if you didn’t know her name.” Mikelle slowed even more and allowed his horse to graze. “What are you implying, my friend? That I had some special interest in this woman?” “You lusted for her from the first time you saw her in the cave. Do you deny it?” Michael waved off his question. “I lust after many women. One is as good as another.” Anthony spat into the dirt. “There was a time I would have believed that to be true.” “And now?” “You are different. This woman changed you.” “I didn’t even know her.” “Didn’t matter. What you did know changed you.” “By all the powers of Jove! You are daft. I am not changed.” Anthony shook his head in denial. “Then, why are you mourning her?” “Burn in Hades. You deliberately anger me.” “Do you deny giving the command to keep her workload light and her bedding clean? Do you deny taking her to your bed without thought for her feelings as you would have any other slave? Do you deny holding her punishment when she disobeyed you?” Mikelle couldn’t deny any of it, and the hearing the truth made him livid. He hadn’t cared for the woman. He would never let a woman -- any woman have that kind of hold over him -- especially a slave. Women were a convenience. Anthony’s statements were untrue. The woman was nothing to him. He felt the heat rush to his face and wanted nothing more than to strike his friend. “I will prove I am not changed. I will prove it by my actions. You will see.” * * * * * Michael waited at the door as Niki filled out paperwork and wrote the statement necessary to facilitate her release. Her words were mostly true. She begin with the first attack on the island during her honeymoon and finished with her discovery by Michael. They left the station as soon as she’d finished. The ride was long -- bathed in an uncomfortable silence. Finally, Niki could stand it no longer. “Why are you doing this?” She hated having to ask, but he had not given her any explanation. “You’re my wife.” As if that explained anything. “I left you, remember?” He smiled, but didn’t take his eyes off the road. “Oh, I remember. I thought you were dead -- murdered. So did the police. You left them some rather convincing clues.” “No, I didn’t.
