Chapter 92
Niki allowed a pleading note to creep into her voice. “I really mean it. I didn’t try to frame you for murder. You have to believe me.”
“I do? Just because you say so, right? And because of the bond of trust existing between us, of course.”
His sarcastic tone salted her wound. “I had no idea Cassandra was framing you for murder.”
“Why do I find that hard to believe?”
He paused, but she could tell he wasn’t finished.
“Even if I believed you, how would you explain aligning yourself with the woman in the first place? You knew she had set me up once before or were you in on that also?”
The question stunned her.
“Of course not. How could you . . . .”
He cut her off before she could finish. “How could I believe that the woman who blackmailed me for marriage and tried to frame me for murder might have been behind Cassandra as well? You connect the dots.”
His accusation sickened her. She had wanted revenge -- that much was true -- but she wasn’t the monster he thought she was.
“How could you think I was capable of being that diabolical?”
He cut her a sideways glance. “You don’t really want me to answer that, do you?”
She searched for words to convince him of her innocence. The problem was -- he was right. The evidence against her was damning.
“What are you going to do?”
“I’ve already done it. I’ve written all this down, and my lawyer assures me we have a solid case. Try to leave me again, or break our contract, and I’ll have you arrested. Of course, the false statement you wrote at the police station will also be included. That’s perjury, you know.
He was bluffing. He had to be. But could she take the risk? No. She couldn’t, and he knew it.
“So, what’s next? Do I quit my job to devote myself solely to you?”
His face twisted into a grimace. “And me be without your charming company every day? Absolutely not. You will continue to work in the office. That way, we’ll be together. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?”
“What you mean is you want me under your thumb every minute of every day.”
“However you choose to look at it, my pet. I only want to please you.”
His sarcasm was biting. She would have almost preferred him to rant and rave. This was definitely going to be the year from hell.

Nicadea slipped inside the entrance of the cave. The dark cavern intimidated her as much as the outside -- possibly more. At least beyond the cave she could see the moon and the stars. The heavenly orbs comforted her -- reminded her of her other life -- the one where she was happy. Would her world ever be happy again? She doubted it. Nothing was left of her old life. Nothing except memories. To join the rebels would be her goal, her salvation. She would fight to banish the Roman enemy who had stolen her life. Most of all she would destroy the memory of a particular Roman who had changed her life forever.
