If I believed that’s what you really wanted, I might consider it.” Her head jerked around. “It is.” He swirled the drink in his glass. “Are you willing to prove it?” “How could I do that?” “Show me how indifferent you really are.” He set his glass down on the table and took hers from her hand. “What are you going to do?” Her heart pounded almost painfully against her chest. He set it down as well and pulled her toward him. She put up her hands against his shoulders in a gesture of defense, but knew it was only a token resistance. His cologne had a woodsy smell. It teased her senses and started a stirring in her gut. What was wrong with her? She knew where this was going. Why didn’t she pull away? Before she had a chance to consider further, he covered her lips with his. He tasted of salt, and she didn’t object when he opened her mouth with his tongue. Her mind opened to the sensations flooding her body. His hand closed around her breast. She ended the kiss. “Please.” She breathed the word against his mouth, not completely sure if she wanted him to stop or give her more. Mainly, she just wanted time to think, but her body had other ideas. He unbuttoned the top buttons of her blouse and pushed the straps down on her arms. She looked down at her taut nipples and gasped as his thumbs commenced to outline them in slow circles. Shifting positions, he tucked his arm under her legs and pulled her into his lap. She could feel his hardness growing beneath her. “Please stop.” He planted soft kisses along the edge of her cheek and slipped his hand between her legs. “If that’s what you want.” She closed her eyes and nuzzled against him. Kissing wasn’t sex. She could stop him any time she wanted. Just a while longer. He pulled her panties to one side and inserted the tip of his finger. She moaned and arched her back, needing more. He caressed her - petted her - until she was weak with wanting and desire. She didn’t object when he lifted and carried her to the bedroom. What was the difference between annulment and divorce? Just a matter of semantics. Nothing she couldn’t deal with - later. He undressed quickly. Her clothing took longer, but not much. “I want you, Niki.” His words sounded deep and husky, and she knew saying them had been an effort. His skin warmed hers, pressing her back into the mattress. She ran her fingers along his back. He groaned. “You’re so beautiful.” She guided him inside her and gave herself to the moment. He moved slowly at first, and then with momentum. She matched his movements with her own until her world exploded with sweetness.
