CHAPTER 94
“Would you like something to drink?”
Niki’s head jerked up. “You’re being nice to me?”
He flashed her a heart-stopping grin. “You don’t have to look so surprised. I’m not a monster, you know. I’m the victim here. Remember?”
She dropped her head. He was right. She was the monster. So why did she feel like the one who was being hurt. Maybe she was doing it to herself - allowing her feelings of guilt to put her in this position. What she needed was to remember what had motivated her in the first place. What she needed was a new attitude.
“As if you’d let me forget. And yes, I would like something to drink. Something with tequila.”
One dark eyebrow lifted in surprise, but other than that his expression didn’t change. “Margaritas all round.” He picked up the phone.
“Don’t forget the salt.”
He grinned. “I’m going to run down to the bar. You might want to freshen up.”
“Is that a criticism?”
“Not at all. Just thought you might want a few minutes alone.” He turned toward the door and then back. “And just so you know, I’ve got a man outside the door. You won’t want to try to leave.”
She smiled sweetly. “No. Of course not.” Bastard!
She watched the door close and latch, and then released a slow breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Now was her chance. To what? She walked to the window. There was a small balcony, but she couldn’t climb down the side of the building like a spider.
Still, she had to do something. She marched to the room’s only other closed door. This had to be the bedroom. The door slid soundlessly across the plush beige carpet. The bed dominated the large room, upstaging the scenic picture window as well as the stone fireplace.
“ Didn’t realize you were so eager.” Niki turned so quickly she almost knocked herself out on the doorframe. “I didn’t hear you come back.” The words fell haltingly from her lips - made her want to slap herself for sounding like a Catholic schoolgirl. Slapping him would’ve been nice to. “I got bored. Thought I’d like to look around.”
“Of course you did.”
She slipped away from the room, and slammed the door behind her. Smug, arrogant, sonofabitch. She felt his eyes follow her as she reclaimed her seat on the couch.
He placed their drinks on the coffee table and slipped in beside her, his leg touching hers.
She shifted her weight to make more room, but he adjusted as well, keeping them close. She knew she was in way over her head. Maybe he’d listen to reason. Maybe he’d feel sorry for her. Maybe shit. But she knew she had to try.
“Look, I’m not proud of what I’ve done. You have every right to feel angry and want revenge.” She paused to take a sip of her Margarita. “Couldn’t we just annul the marriage and forget it ever happened? I’d move away, and you’d never see me again.”
