Yeah, I saw a little bit of sorority life, but didn't stick around for the Frat counterpart. It was annoying, like you said, bitchy drama queens or loud drunken idiots. They've done some other ones too, like that WWE show where they try to become wrestlers, and that one, oh what was it called? They went around checking out scary/haunted places. I was going to say Fear Factor, but then remembered no, that was the OTHER fear reality show. There's also that one Scare Tactics, on Sci-fi. I guess people get kicks off watching people in terror as well as people suffering. Sortof sets up a "better him than me" mentality doesn't it? The MTV reality shows that I think are kind of interesting are the ones where they take a kid and put him in someone else's place for the day. Do you remember? Wasn't it Switched or Flipped or something like that? There was also Made. That kind at least could be kind of informative, and usually the kid learned something, like not to be prejudice or do drugs or whatever. But I think you're right, I think the producers want the people to fight. They think it'll increase the drama or the ratings or what have you. It makes for an amazing difference between UPN blind date shows and TLC date shows doesn't it? I wonder which date show gets higher ratings?
And that's a good point about Candid Camera. Most people think that Reality TV is a fairly new phenomenon, but when you think back, it's not really. Even Judge Judy, Judge Hackett and Texas Justice are types of reality tv, and court shows have been around for a while too.
You know what this has made me realize? There are a LOT of reality tv shows out there. More than I realized!!! I really had never thought about just how many shows there are! I bet producers like it - they don't have to worry about actors or writers or elaborate sets or anything like that. I wonder if reality shows are cheaper. LOL I had a thought. So many actors are going to be out of work, they're going to start appearing on reality shows pretending to be Joe and Jane Average and in the end it will have come full circle. :-)
Hmm, I had a thought. Maybe you can use it in your paper Fu! lol It's just that a lot of times mass culture is denigrated and dismissed as mere escapism. I've been encountering that issue alot in my own paper. They turn on the tv and get lost in the shows, because people can't handle 'the real world'. And yet here, one could argue that 'reality' itself has become a form of escapism... Weird, isn't it? Anyway, I'm off. I shouldn't even be here, I should be working on my own paper. Someone should do a paper on the functions of message boards as escapism in mass culture. I know it's helped me escape my paper for a few minutes... LOL
