Startled, she jumped at the sudden approach of the stallion, hair standing on end. A snort of fear escaped her for, he was right, the whole land spoke of the grey stallion. She spun round, ears flattened, nostrils dilating scarlet. But in seeing the kind look in his eye, she relaxed and heaved a sigh of relief. He would not hurt her. She regarded him for a moment, eyes worried and fearful. Then, with a departing bob of her head and a whisk of her chocolate tail, she was gone. Her departing whinney rang in his ears. The only evidence that she had ever been there.

The scent of Yuluwirri was stale, she must have moved on. Still, her tracks had not been washed away by rain and so, nose to the ground, the golden mare followed her friend through the bush.
