Case 19A-12B:
The Walking Dead

June 5th 256,

Many things have happened since my last log. What appeared to be a lizard-creature problem has turned into matters much worse.

My last orders were to retrieve the bodies from the caves and return them back to the surface. I gathered some volunteers, but we were unable to complete the orders. Once we came to the first room of corpses we noticed several Walking Dead, or Zombies as they are also called. They attacked us on sight. I presume they meant to eat us. After dispatching of them, the Elf Priestess created a sort of spiritual barrier at several exits of the cave complex. We initially thought the Undead 'plague' was contained within the cave.

Unfortunately, this was not the case. We came upon a very large group of walking 'Zombies'. Most wore the uniforms of the Militia and/or Knights of St. Calumus. These were the men that had set off to march towards Yurissa's army.
The Undead are not tied to the caves. They appear elsewhere as well.

After we reported to the Head Constable about our most recent findings we were to meet with a man named 'Mullek' who lived north of Bridalveil. Supposedly he had more information regarding the Undead sightings.
His house was built almost on top of a cemetary, which tensed us all. We found Mullek next to his house, which was burning to the ground. We never asked about the fire, but I assume it had to do with the Undead.
Mullek told us that some Gypsies were responsable for the 'Mists', as he called it. And in turn, these 'Mists' were responsable for rising the dead.
As we escorted Mullek back to Bridalveil we were assaulted by an enormous amount of various Undead; some zombies, some even skeletons. As fate would have it, Mullek did not survive the attack.

One of the volunteers I brought with me turned out to be a Gypsy, or Vistani as they call themselves. He brought us to their encampment, where Madam Ulgeska, the leader of the group, told us a story. She claimed that somehow Bridalveil and the land surrounding it had been moved to a place within the mists. These mists resurrected the dead into Undead. According to her we must find the Master or Mistress of the Mist and kill him or her. Although most of what she told us sounds like children's fairy tales, the part of the Master, and in particulary the Mistress concerns me. Things are slowly starting to make a little sense in a disturbing sort of way.

If I am not mistaken, the woman that escaped from the caves is responsable for this Mist. Lascuvi, the Gypsy that was with us, said that 6 of his friends (which were the Gypsies Mullek mentioned) suddenly walked off. They weren't zombies, for they still could think and act like normal people. I believe they are suffering from the same thing Thalan, the mad elf, was suffering from. Although it would appear that they are affected much worse than he was. Perhaps the Lady's power was small when she was contained, but when released she was able to turn more and more people into these 'Zombies'. According to Madam Ulgeska people who walk into the Mist become Undead, so I believe this Lady is using her 'mind-speak' (for lack of a better term) abilities to move people into the Mist and thus turning them into the Walking Dead.

Addendum: We also discovered that Thalan had disappeared from his holding cell. The Sherrif had not seen the elf at all and was unaware of him being held there. I have yet to ask the Head Constable wether he knows more or not.

End of Log.

Signed,
Robert Hughes
Constable of Bridalveil
